Toxic Plants For Cats & Dogs
A lot of household plants can be toxic to cats and dogs. Some of these plants can be mild in their effects but some can be deadly! If your pet eats any of the plants here please check how serious it might be and contact the clinic if you are at all worried.
(N.B. This is not a comprehensive list and does not represent plants that might cause allergic or anaphylactic reactions.)

Aloe Vera
This is a popular household plant, often kept for it's medicinal properties.

Hydrangeas
A popular garden plant, these flowers change colour with the pH of the soil.

Mistletoe
The Christmas cheer continues with another toxic festive favorite. Kissing is fine but eating is not.

Poinsettias
Christmas plants seem to be well represented here. Poinsettias can be irritant if eaten.

Azaleas
One of the most popular families of garden plants with 1000's of varients.

Ferns
Green leafy plants that thrive in shadey environments.

Irises
A perennial flowering plant that grows from bulbs or creeping rhizomes.

Nightshades
A large family of plants including tomatoes and potatoes. Then there is Deadly Nightshade...

Poppies
The classic Rememberance Day flower also contains alkaloids that can poison cats or dogs.

Chrysanthemum
A popular inclusion in bouquets but toxic to dogs and especially toxic to cats.

Holly
A classic Christmas decoration that can ruin the season.

Ivy
A climbing ground cover. Some varieties can be toxic.

Oleander
A temperate and sub-tropical garden favorite with delicate flowers, usually pink or white.

Sago Palm
Rarely seen in Tassie, the Sago Palm is a common source of poisonings up North.

Cyclamen
An attractive garden and potted indoor plant.

Hyacinths
A Spring-blooming perennial found in many gardens.

Lilies
A commonly found flower both in gardens and bouquets. Highly toxic to cats.

Peonies
Peonies (or Peonie Roses) are a flowering shrub that is commonly used in bouquets.

Tulips
So colourful that they have their own festival at Table Cape. Also toxic to cats and dogs.
